Is Colonial National Historical Park worth it?
Colonial NHP links two of the most consequential sites in American history: Jamestown, where English colonization took root in 1607, and Yorktown, where the Revolution effectively ended in 1781.
The Colonial Parkway connecting them is genuinely scenic. But the experience score of 48 reflects a real limitation: this is primarily a history-and-driving destination, not an outdoor adventure park. If early American history moves you, the $15 entry is well earned. If it does not, the appeal shrinks considerably.
Who it is for
History enthusiasts, road cyclists who want a scenic and historically loaded route, and families working through the Junior Ranger program will find this rewarding. Visitors seeking trails, wildlife, or backcountry solitude should look elsewhere.
Highlights
- Historic Jamestowne: the actual 1607 settlement site, walkable via self-guided tour with surviving archaeological remnants
- The Colonial Parkway scenic drive connecting Jamestown and Yorktown, a dedicated and uncommonly pleasant road for cycling or cruising
- Guided tours that frame the collision of European, Virginia Indian, and African cultures at the founding of colonial America
- The Glasshouse, a working demonstration site tied to one of the earliest industries attempted at Jamestown
Editor's tipThe entrance gate at Historic Jamestowne closes at 4:30 p.m., so arrive by mid-morning if you want unhurried time at both the grounds and the Glasshouse. Summer humidity in Tidewater Virginia is serious: bring water and plan indoor breaks around midday.
